"Hubert"^[2] is the seventh episode of Season 2 of The Good Doctor. It is the twenty-fifth episode overall, and aired on November 12, 2018.

Synopsis[]

Dr. Shaun Murphy and Dr. Morgan Reznick must contend with two brothers who are bargaining over life and death. Meanwhile, Dr. Claire Browne's friend who is dying of cancer asks her for something she doesn't think she can give her; and Dr. Aaron Glassman is dealing with the effects of his treatment.^[3]

Plot[]

Shaun and Lea are getting a pet. Although they have some disagreements on what to get, they eventually choose a goldfish that Lea names "Hubert". Meanwhile, Claire visits her former college roommate Kayla and her husband Dash while delivering a pie. Kayla has terminal cancer and Claire is helping them out, while happy to see them. Kayla suffers a temporary pain, which doctors have tried to use morphine to deal with but it's not working.

Claire comes to Neil and Dr. Park about helping Kayla and points out a lesion that is causing the pain. At the same time, paramedics are bringing in Santiago Benitez, a man who was working on a construction site with a nail gun when he feel down the stairs. As Dr. Lim removes the nail stuck in his forehead and puts a band-aid over the wound, his blood pressure starts dropping and another nail is found in his abdomen. As Neil checks over Kayla, Dash reports her pain and Neil promises that they can help her. Although somewhat reluctant because of Claire's recent insubordination to him, he also allows for Claire to be involved.

Dr. Glassman is waiting for his recent cancer treatment when he sees a young boy with a yo-yo who teaches him. Santiago's surgery is underway and Lim is trying to find his left kidney, only for Shaun and Morgan to be unable to and realize that he only has his right kidney. Kayla's surgery is also happening when the tumor is found to be invading the vessel wall, though Neil is able to get it out. Park also suggests that Kayla could get treatment if her cancer is only in her abdomen and give her six months to live.

Kayla and Dash are informed about this, though Neil warns that Kayla could die in the OR. Ultimately, they're convinced into allowing the surgery. As Morgan and Shaun find that Santiago has extensive vein thrombosis and they can create a graft to help him, Shaun is called by Lea if he can get a mini castle for Hubert on his way home as Hubert looks somewhat bored to her. While Shaun and Morgan try to get a donor kidney, Dr. Blaize comes to see Glassman and comments on his new yo-yo while Glassman retorts about how long she kept him waiting.

As Kayla states that she's afraid of how long she has to live, she tries to convince Claire to date Dash who will be all on his own after Kayla dies. While scans on Kayla begin, Shaun and Morgan see that Santiago's brother Armando is a perfect match and try to get him to sign some consent forms. However, he agrees to it only if Santiago sells their father's business to him. He tries to reason that they can both make money from this, but Santiago refuses since he was left the business when Armando abandoned him and their father to go to college.

Claire reports to Dash that they can do the surgery on Kayla, while he agrees on how insane Kayla is for trying to get them together. When Shaun and Morgan inform Lim of the situation, Shaun talks about how several people donate organs to basically make themselves look good. Lim then calls out Morgan when she appears to act like she's never tried to take advantage of situations due to her competitive attitude (as Armando is doing) and tells them to figure out how to get the kidney.

As Claire is preparing Kayla for surgery, she gets annoyed at how Kayla is still trying to get her to be with Dash. While Claire is frustrated, she agrees to drop it in return for the two going on a date. Morgan and Shaun also confront Armando concerning his actions, but he still refuses to do it if he can't get the business out of it. He also claims that they have no leverage and no cards to play over him, even calling their bluff when Morgan states that he loves Santiago whom Shaun goes to talk to.

That evening, Claire goes out with Dash. Although they still both agree about their positions concerning what Kayla is trying to do, they talk about their college life and appear to have a good time. Meanwhile, Shaun tries to convince Santiago into selling the business and states that he can start a new one without Armando. Santiago states that their father created it himself and was a hard-working and honest man, traits that he expected his sons to have. Santiago also states that he is trying to make his father proud and he wouldn't be if Santiago just sold the company, only his graft ends up failing and his arm starts bleeding.

Lim inserts a tunnel catheter to clot off the blood as Shaun states Santiago has less leverage. As Lim gets annoyed with Shaun for negotiating with the wrong brother, Morgan suggests that they bring in the brothers' family to find a donor and call out Armando for his selfish attitude. When Shaun returns to his and Lea's apartment, he finds her upset as Hubert has died. Shaun attempts to suggest that they get another fish, but Lea keeps refusing because she doesn't want another one and is in tears; she believes herself to be pathetic for apparently killing Hubert, as well as that she tried to help Donnie save their Grandpa Rod's shop when she returned to Hershey which failed and their relationship suffered as a result.

Kayla is about to go to surgery, with Dash and Claire giving their support. Unfortunately, she still won't give up about Claire and Dash getting together and accuses Claire of not being a good friend for refusing; she still thinks that they can be good together, but Claire states that Kayla is pressuring her which Kayla claims that Claire has always needed since she's so afraid a lot. This leads to Claire retorting about how Kayla got her to go along to a pledge week only to be turned down by all of the campus' sororities, invited Breeze to Claire's graduation without Claire's knowledge and Kayla always has to have things her way and wants to dictate not only Claire's life but other people's. All the same, Claire feels sorry when Kayla is taken to surgery.

Santiago and Armando's family soon arrives, which Armando sees and Morgan states that they will see how much of an "ass" he is. When Armando still thinks that Santiago is fighting for the company, Shaun points out that he's fighting for their father and is dying doing so. Armando claims that their father was not actually a good person, even after all that Santiago did for him and still was on his death bed, which Shaun suggests is a good card to play if Santiago was informed of this. Armando does and compliments Santiago on how much of a hard worker he is and states that their father should've been proud, only for Santiago to just believe that Armando is making this up to get Santiago to sell the business.

Armando agrees to donate his kidney, while Shaun states that his own father wished that he hadn't been born and wasn't worth the trouble. However, Shaun states that he knew he was as he had Steve to look out for him while Armando is in tears. His kidney is soon donated to Santiago, while Shaun is told by Nurse Villanueva that his stat cultures came back positive for Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. Shaun tells Lim and Morgan that it's not for Santiago and that "It's too late".

Glassman soon goes for his cancer treatment, following which he continues yo-yoing but thinks that someone took his wallet from his locker. However, Blaize reveals that he actually gave it to her before his session in case it got stolen. Claire soon reports to Dash that most of the tumor was removed from Kayla who is having a chemotherapy bath. Claire also gets Dash some food, all the while he's nervous about Kayla and everything she's been through. He wants to help her, but she won't let him and he is just waiting for her to die when Claire is called back to the OR; Kayla is in cardiopulmonary collapse.

Neil sees that Kayla's condition is because of the chemo and states that they need to stop it. However, Claire suggests that the fluid build-up isn't because of the chemo bath but is the chemo bath itself and is compressing her heart. If they close the hole, the treatment can continue on Kayla. Armando is soon taken to see Santiago who is recovering. As he is being taken back, Santiago thanks him for the kidney which Armando appreciates but jokes about Santiago not expecting another one. While Kayla is in recovery, Claire comes to make amends but Kayla states that it's alright. Claire then states that Kayla is a good friend who just wants to help others, but still convinces her to let Dash be there.

Claire soon goes to see Neil to thank him for helping her and states about how great he is, which he appreciates. Meanwhile, Shaun takes Lea to the pet store and approaches a man there about getting them another fish after Hubert died. While Lea is reluctant about it and the man states that what happened to Hubert supposedly isn't the store's responsibility, Shaun states that Hubert had Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (from Shaun's earlier test) which he gained in the pet store. Although reluctant, the man allows them to pick a fish. Shaun offers for him and Lea to try again with another fish, while trying to offer comfort with the fact that Hubert's death wasn't Lea's fault. Although she sees that another fish won't sort out her problems, she sees one that she likes and Shaun states that platies are hardy fish.

In Fixation, it's revealed that Kayla's treatment did extend her life for six more months before finally passing away of her cancer.
When Morgan was appalled at Armando trying to use the fact that Santiago needed a new kidney to his advantage to gain their father's company, Lim retorted with how Morgan had basically done the same with her competitiveness. This is something of a reference to More, when Morgan tried to take advantage of Shaun's medical error and get it reported so as to get him fired and thus, rid herself of some of her competition.
