"Seven Reasons" is the thirteenth episode of Season 1 of The Good Doctor. This episode aired on January 22, 2018.

Synopsis[]

Dr. Shaun Murphy suspects his patient is lying about the reason for her injury and makes a controversial assumption about her motives. Meanwhile, Dr. Neil Melendez’s personal life could be affecting his work and, ultimately, his patients lives.[2]

Plot[]

After Dr. Glassman skips breakfast with Shaun, Claire and Lim are bringing in a man, Cole Carpenter, who has a ruptured aneurysm following a stroke as his son and wife are panicking. While on rounds with Dr. Andrews, Shaun accidentally angers him after he asks if he and Jared are in trouble due to their recent transgressions. They visit their patient, Naja Modi, with a burn on her arm when she suddenly starts to have chest pains. However, her vitals remain the same and Shaun becomes suspicious of her. Claire is assisting Dr. Lim with their patient, while realising that Dr. Coyle got a new job and a raise.

Shaun and Jared inform Naja that she wasn't having a heart attack but the scans did show that her lungs were inflamed and they will be doing a bronchoscopy on her. However, Shaun doesn't believe she's telling the truth. Claire is annoyed that Coyle wasn’t fired, to which Aoki states that Coyle told a different story to Claire who has no proof of what he did. Doctor Lim tells Cole’s wife, Tessa, that he's going to be okay, only for Claire to state that they've found another aneurysm. Shaun, Jared and Neil do a bronchoscopy on Naja, but Neil breaks the scope through the bronchial wall and they hurriedly prep for surgery because she is hemorrhaging.

While trying to figure out Naja’s injuries, Shaun wonders if Neil too is angry at Jared and upset with Jessica breaking up with him. He also goes to see Dr. Glassman who remarks about not turning up for breakfast and tells Shaun that he himself should make a decision about reporting Neil’s mistake. While Andrews and Lim discuss what to do about Cole, they consider involving Coyle but Claire refuses. Jessica also asks Neil if he is hurt about their breakup, though he says he isn’t. While Shaun still thinks Naja is lying, she says that she was just confused and suddenly starts to throw up.

Claire and Lim talk to Tessa about how Cole needs the surgery or else he will die, though she won’t consent because he doesn’t want to live compromised. Claire and Shaun have breakfast together while discussing Cole which Shaun attempts to advise her on. Neil and Jessica also talk about how he screwed up, with Neil upset because Jessica believes Shaun over him and is adamant that the puncture wasn't his fault. Claire confronts Tessa, realizing that Cole is abusing her. Tessa also wants to just let him die so that Payton can have a good memory of his father. Shaun states that Naja has ethanol in her body which he thinks could be from making chemical weapons and she might be a terrorist, but Neil just thinks he’s thinking like that because she's Muslim and states that unfounded speculations can destroy a person’s life. Claire tries to convince Tessa by threatening to go to court, so Tessa signs the consent form.

Shaun asks Naja about the mixture, but she gets upset when she thinks Shaun is discriminating her and then has a heart attack. While Neil talks to a lawyer about Naja’s surgery, Claire performs Cole’s surgery. However, she and Dr. Lim end up having to terminate the procedure due to Cole’s blood pressure skyrocketing and need to figure out what they missed. When Shaun and Jared have differing ideas on how to treat Naja, Neil decides to put her on antibiotics. Claire also accuses Tessa of trying to kill Cole by filling his capsules with sugar, only to come to the conclusion that it was Payton. Naja's vitals end up spiking so Jared switches from antibiotics to steroids, which saves her life and Shaun tells Neil to thank Jared.

Shaun knocks on Lea's old door, only to find that a man, Kenny, has moved in. Claire goes to tell Tessa that the surgery went well but she and Payton are gone, while Shaun, Jared and Neil learn that Naja’s brother took the ethanol from a drug company he works at and she used it to create perfume. While Neil breaks the news that they’re getting Coyle’s former residents, he and Jessica talk about their relationship. Claire talks with Kirsten, another woman who worked with Coyle, Shaun tries to talk to Glassman about their friendship, but Glassman doesn’t see how he can be Shaun’s friend as part of their deal to give Shaun space. Devastated, Shaun goes and buys a pine tree air freshener to remember his and Lea’s trip.
