"22 Steps" is the seventh episode of Season 1 of The Good Doctor. The episode aired on November 13, 2017.

Dr. Shaun Murphy has to confront prejudice from an unlikely source when he takes on the case of a patient with autism, and Dr. Jared Kalu has to learn to accept his limitations as a surgeon.[2]

Dr. Aaron Glassman makes Claire Browne an appointment with a grief counselor. Shaun Murphy encounters a patient with autism. Jared Kalu works with a patient who needs a new pacemaker. Shaun and Clare must take Liam to get an MRI. Shaun talks him through it but Liam ends up freaking out. Kalu loses his patient and searches the hospital for him. He finds Glenn in the basement. Glenn refuses to go back upstairs saying he'd rather die.

Dr. Neil Melendez suggests they do exploratory surgery to find out what's wrong with Liam. Claire talks to Shaun about how Liam looks up to him. Kalu waits for Glenn to pass out so that he can take him upstairs. Liam's parents don't want Shaun to operate on their son. Dr. Glassman asks Dr. Melendez if he agrees with the parents or if he's going to support Shaun. Kalu finally convinces Glenn to go back upstairs but when he turns his back he loses him again. Dr. Melendez tries to convince Liam's parents that Shaun is a good surgeon but they still refuse to give their consent. It's only after Liam asks for Shaun to be in the surgery that they agree.

Kalu finds Glenn on the roof and takes him downstairs where he signs a DNR. Dr. Melendez lets Shaun have the first cut in the surgery. Shaun finds what's wrong with Liam and, with the help of Claire and Melendez, they save the patient's life. Claire talks to the counselor who tells her that she needs to talk to someone about her feelings. Shaun tells the parents that Liam will recover and the mom hugs him. Kalu helps his patient die peacefully. Claire and Kalu talk about the patients they lost. Shaun and Dr. Glassman go to the store to buy a television.
